I already had the path to my module specified in the conf.py file; if this is not specified I cannot build the documentation locally on my own machine. When I do specify it, I can build the documentation locally. The problem is that RTD does not render the docstrings. For the module search path to be set up properly, you need to go two levels up from conf.py: sys.path.insert (0, os.path.abspath ("../..")) lists that work
